20 March

1985 – The “Great American Meatout” was launched on this day as a spontaneous protest against a US Senate resolution declaring the National Meat Week. Since then, the movement grew into one of the biggest spontaneous education campaigns. The first day of spring, March 20, symbolizes renewal and an opportunity to change the way of life.

Hundreds of activists in the United States and several other countries celebrate “Meatout” mainly cooking and tasting meatless dishes, distributing flyers, giving lectures and by other educational events. Visitors are asked to pledge to leave the meat for one day (March 20); forty US governors and 47 mayors of major American cities pledged so far.

The Times, Huffington Post and Los Angeles Times have reported about the “Meatout” day.
