GM Freeze

GM Freeze is an UK not-for-profit company that calls to a freeze on growing genetically modified plants and the production of genetically modified farm animals. It objects to importing foods, plants, farm crops, farm animals and foods/feeds derived from GM plants and animals and objects patenting genetic resources for food and farm crops. GM Freeze is deeply concerned about the speed at which genetic modification is being introduced into food and farming and believes the GM technology has to stopped an rethinked because of the huge implications and questions that remain to be answered about its safety and impact.

The organization provides a range of useful information on how each individual can affect various aspects of GMO from requirement of better testing to getting more information from the food industry and supermarket chains.

Their initiative is supported globally by over 300 NGOs and farmers’ organisations, and has collected about 100.000 signatures against patents on plants and animals. The coalition now urges the institutions of the EU to go for clear legal regulations to exclude from patentability plants and animals, genetic material and processes for breeding of plants and animals and food derived thereof.

Water is a Human Right

Water is a public good, not a commodity. This European Citizens’ Initiative calls on the European Commission to propose legislation to propose legislation implementing the human right to water and sanitation as recognised by the United Nations, and promoting the provision of water and sanitation as essential public services for all. The EU legislation should require governments to ensure and to provide all citizens with sufficient and clean drinking water and sanitation. The Initiative urges that the EU institutions and Member States be obliged to ensure that all inhabitants enjoy the right to water and sanitation, that water supply and management of water resources should not be subject to ‘internal market rules’ and that water services are excluded from liberalisation.
